Anime and Manga Art Styles Evolution

2021, a  new decade has begun. And for sure the style of anime and manga that we will see over the next 10 years will be different from the last 10 years. This article will be a comparison between the art styles of drawing old and new Anime and Manga, from the period of sixties to this day in various aspects, including drawing characters (features of hair, clothes ...), backgrounds and effects ... etc, but I will focus on characters drawing styles.

Anime Art Style Evolution

This part will be covering the evolution stages of anime drawing during periods starting the 60s till the time I am writing this article

The 1960s to the early 1980s

Anime art style changes and evolution from the 60 to 80

From the beginning of the Sixties - early seventies

This period was characterized by the simplicity of drawing with no focus on shading and it was the beginning of almost Colored Anime. The features are very simple and most of the characters look childish.

Mid-seventies - early eighties

The two periods, a little bit similar, in which the features of the characters appear to be more focused on, especially drawing eyes, and the characters appear larger and detailed, in these periods, studios have been adding more shading.

The first half of the 1980s to the mid-1990s

The three phases in this period are similar: With the beginning of the increase in the strength of features at the end of the eighties, the increase in hair detail, shading, and lighting in the nineties with an abundance of strange hair colors. But the strangest thing in the nineties was the emergence of obstructive faces style, for example in the anime: Slayers.

The late 1990s to the 2010s decade

From 90s till 2000s

From here, the reliance on digital illustration increased, while it was mostly hand drawing in the past, Perhaps some consider it the time of beautiful characters (maybe for my generation at least), where the drawing of features reached the best level in terms of details and accuracy, especially drawing eyes (thick eyelashes and wide eyeliner), the focus has always been on the characters being of the utmost beauty and elegance, of course, this does not apply to all works, but most of them, e ven the methods of drawing are considered to be the most difficult in that period.

2000s until 2010s

Features become simpler as they were in the past, but still, preserve the beautiful details that they held in the previous period.

After 2010 through till Now (2020-2021)

I have chosen this picture because it suffices as an example of the most popular drawing techniques of this period, as it is characterized by the ease of mastering its simplicity and the similarity of features to almost all of the characters that appear to be the funniest of any age.

Red cheeks have become a necessary condition in drawing girls, as well as coloring the lips with a light color. As for the eyes, they are distinguished by light eyelashes and the simplicity of the iris details, even the bodies appear thin and the head returns to appear large on the size of the body.

Manga Art Style Evolution

The evolution was not limited, only, to drawing anime, and of course, most of the anime shows and series are adapted from the manga. Some fans may say that the art of characters in the old Manga looked nicer than they are now, this is normal as the mangaka develops his/her drawing style, and as the techniques in this field changes with the evolution of technology and materials, the style of the drawing changes, so this make the characters look more serious. This development is not only reflected in the mangaka characters but also tells us the evolution of the artist's skills and personality with the age of practice of this field. For the new Mangakas, it is natural that their works are based upon the current art styles.
